How to Compost on Site

  1. Choose a Location

    • Pick a shady spot near your vanilla plants for easy access.

    • Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

  2. Layering Method

    • Base Layer: Start with a thick layer of seed-free mulch (~10 cm) for aeration.

    • Food Waste Layer: Spread a thin layer of food scraps (~5 cm).

    • Mulch Layer: Cover food scraps with another 5-10 cm of mulch.

    • Repeat until the pile is about 1 meter tall.

  3. Moisture & Aeration

    • Keep the pile moist (like a damp sponge).

    • Turn the pile once a week to speed up decomposition.

  4. Composting Time

    • Fast Method: 4-6 weeks (turn every 2-3 days).

    • Slow Method: 3-6 months (turn every 2-3 weeks).

  5. Ready-to-Use Compost

    • Dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling compost is ready.

    • Apply around vanilla roots, avoiding direct contact with stems.
