Step-by-Step Pollination Process

  1. Locate an Open Flower: Flowers open in the morning and should be pollinated before noon for the best success rate.

  2. Open the flower for ease of access. Using a toothpick or bamboo sliver, carefully lift the little flap (rostellum) at the tip of the flower ‘spike’ which separates the male and female parts. As it lifts all the way upwards, it will lift the pollen sac

  3. Once the flap is completely ‘flipped’ and now under the pollen sac, transfer the pollen: press the pollen sac (anther) against the stigma to facilitate pollination.

  4. Press the Column Gently: Lightly pinch the flower between the thumb and index finger to ensure pollen contact. Use about as much pressure to click a computer mouse button.

  5. Count every flower pollinated with a handheld ‘clicker’ counter

  6. Mark Pollinated Flowers/clusters: Use coloured tape to mark which flowers have been pollinated by tying a marking tape around the stem closest to flowers. (if not already done prior to flowering)
